RM of Happyland’s story
The Rural Municipality of Happyland No. 231 became a rural municipality on January 1, 1913. It lies in the southwest part of Saskatchewan, next to the Alberta boundary and south of the South Saskatchewan River.
When it was first organized, it was known as the RM of Prussia No. 231. The name was changed sometime in 1917, at the height of the First World War, when anti-German sentiment ran strong in Saskatchewan. It has been Happyland ever since.
Today the RM surrounds the town of Leader and the villages of Mendham and Prelate, with the locality of Liebenthal also within its boundaries. The RM office is in Leader, and the Great Sandhills Railway runs a branch line through the area between Leader and Swift Current.
